Lower Alabama Volleyball has an outstanding staff of experienced coaches who have played and coached the game at different levels and positions. All of the coaches listed below are available to contact for individual lessons.
(Rates will vary based on years of experience and the level where they have experience coaching.)
LAURA JOHNSON

Laura has been coaching club for 11 years and has experience coaching all ages from 5yrs old to the collegiate level. She played at Troy University as a Middle Hitter, Outside & Defensive Specialist. After Troy she was an NCAA DII Assistant Coach at LMU for one season. She is currently in her 6th season as a High School Coach and her 4th at McGill-Toolen Catholic.

EMILY LOMAX

Emily has been coaching club for 4 years and has experience coaching ages 11 to 16 years old. She played at The University of Alabama and is excited to start her 5th season with LAV.

MCKENZIE JOHNSON

McKenzie specializes in defensive and passing lessons. McKenzie Johnson played club volleyball with Dallas Skyline Juniors. During that time, she won a national championship in 2014 and placed third at the GJNC in 2019.
Johnson numerous accolades, including being named 6A District Libero of the Year three times. She was also recognized as District Newcomer of the Year, Defensive MVP three times, and served as a two-time team captain.
Johnson went on to begin a five-year Division I volleyball career at Louisiana Tech University. Her collegiate honors include Second-Team All-Conference USA (2021), Conference USA All-Freshman Team (2021), Second-Team All Louisiana (2021), and All-Louisiana Honorable Mention (2023).
She concluded her collegiate career at the University of Cincinnati.

CARLY DOUGHERTY

Carly has 16 years of coaching experience in club and high school at all age ranges. She has coached high school teams to several area championships, regional and state appearances. This is her 10th year at LAV and has had several top 5 finishes in national qualifiers, GJNC national championships and regional championships.

JAYLEN DAFFIN

Jaylen has four years of experience of coaching club, middle school, high school, and junior college volleyball. She competed as a defensive specialist at the University of West George.

DEVYN ORELLANA

Devyn played college ball at the University of Mobile. She has been coaching volleyball for the last 6 years. Devyn started coaching at Davidson High School and now is in her second year of coaching at McGill-Toolen High School. This will be Devyn's third year at LAV!

SHELBY HAMMOND

Shelby Hammond, originally from Gardendale, Al, has played volleyball for 8 years. This is her second season to be coaching for LAV and is so excited to be the 13 National Black Assistant Coach. Shelby was the Offensive MVP of her junior season and the MVP of her senior season at Gardendale High School. She is currently a student at The University of South Alabama and majoring in Emergency Medical Services.

ASHLEY SHERRIN

Ashley has been coaching for 14 years. She has coached every level of the game including youth developmental to varsity school programs as well as 12u-17u local, regional and national level club teams. She is extremely passionate about volleyball and loves to coach with positivity and constant encouragement. Through lessons, she hopes to help current athletes build confidence in certain skills and help new athletes fall in love with everything volleyball has to offer. She specializes in serve and pass, setting and defense but is not opposed to working with hitters as well. Her strength is in building foundations and developing newer athletes.

AYANNA WHITTAKER

Ayanna Whittaker is a 2019 graduate of Faith Academy and was a proud member of the volleyball team as the libero. Before attending Faith Academy, Ayanna attended Knollwood Christian School where she was named captain of her volleyball team. Recently, in 2022, Ayanna graduated from the University of Mobile with a bachelors in both Biology and Chemistry. Ayanna has played volleyball for seven years and has helped coach school volleyball at the request of her high school coaches.
Whittaker is currently beginning her medical school program at the University of South Alabama School of Medicine with aspirations of becoming a physician. Ayanna states that her main goal is to help to girls be the best version of themselves on and off the court. In addition, she would love to see the girls enjoy the sport as she did.
